Quarantine + Communion

A poem about communion

Written by Eugene Scott

Unexpected sanctuary

Furnished with forks and knives

Cupboard doors hanging open

Wait, expectant like our lives

Worship amid the shambles

Quarantined disciples crowd

Pixeled faces, voices muted

Witnesses in the great cloud

Kitchen counter strewn with love

Butter melted on plain plate

Faucet dribbles glistening drop

Bread crumbs scattered like God’s grace

Salt shakers, dirty dishes

Communion wine, loaves and fishes

Our feeble cries, Jesus multiplies

His mysterious Presence

Worship amid the shambles

Bread broken and incarnated

Embodied wine apportioned

Our isolation now frustrated
